Niepoort is amongst the great names in the world of wine. Considering that it is a small undertaking, this is particularly important. When its Vintage 1997 was considered the "Best Port Wine" included in the Top 100 of the Wine Spectator magazine of the year 2000, the Niepoort house definitely won an international projection.
Since 1835 the Dutch family van der Niepoort has been linked to Port Wines. Initially, they were merchants and exporters; bought grapes and wines from the Douro farmers, then sold them under their own brand. Five generations later, a young man in his late twenties came to join this family business and completely revolutionized a structure that had been solidly traditional until then.
Dirk van der Niepoort, born in the city of Porto in 1964, knew how to take advantage of the opportunities that came to him. He graduated in Economics in Switzerland and returned to Porto in 1987, joining the company that his father, Rolf Niepoort, ruled with a markedly conservative policy. The greatest challenge for the enthusiast Dirk van der Nieport was to harmoniously combine tradition with the vanguard.
The first step in this process was the purchase of two wineries in Cima Corgo, a region that has traditionally provided the best Port Wines. With the acquisition of Quinta de Nápoles and Quinta do Carril, the operation of the Niepoort house changed. A new activity emerged: Niepoort produced not only Port Wines, but also table wines.
Dirk Niepoort's other venture was the construction of a modern winery at the Quinta de Nápoles, which is more dedicated to the manufacture of non-fortified wines.
In the Porto Wine universe, the Niepoort house has a place of privilege in the old 'Tawnies', the 'Harvests' and the 'Garrafeiras'. Today, the 'Vintages' of the Niepoort house are positioned amongst the best ever, as demonstrated by its magnificent Vintage 1997.
